Gout is a type of arthritis where uric acid crystals are deposited in one or more joints and lead to inflammation. The uric acid is end product of protein metabolism which may increase either by excessive production or reduced removal via kidneys. Commonest joint involvement is base of 1st toe(Name" Podagara" in greek).The other joint involved are knee , ankle and other foot joints. The gout can be diagnosed clinically and further confirmed with blood uric acid levels.Joint aspirations can show uric acid crystals in polarised microscopy. The gout can be classified into Acute , acute on chronic and chronic depending onset and duration of symptoms. The treatment of acute phase involves anti-inflammatory medications, Tab Colchicine Ice packs and rest along with low protein diet.One should identity the trigger factors for acute gout attack like alcohol, Red meat etc and should avoid them. The chronic gout is treated with long term medications like Febuxostat and Allopurinol. Prevention is always better then cure in Gout.
